Breaking the Silence on Violence Against VAW
Youth Event- 20th July 2015
Dindayal Mall, Gwalior
On 20th July 2015 a youth event was organized under Safe City Initiative to promote a sensitize behavior of youth towards violence against women. The program essentially targeted on disseminating information on various rules and regulations on VAW in India, and mobilizing community action against VAW.
A youth group from the city itself has formed a band named "Ummeed". This band has been very kind in extending their support to the initiative by coming ahead and performing live on 20th July at Dindayal Mall, Gwalior.
With the stage being set, people were curious as to what was going to happen. Nabil Singh held the mic and spoke on the objective of the event, while introducing the safe city initiative program. Following the introduction session by Nabil, members of Ummeed band were invited to sing , the first song sung by the band was "O Ri Chiraiya" from Satyamev Jayate, followed by songs like Bekhauff Azaad , Hum Honge Kamyaab, and Aashayein.
After a brief performance of about 15 minutes, Nabil shared with the audience the various acts and regulations that have been put into force against VAW in India. These included:
- Section 376
- Section 498
- Brief on Dowry Protection Act
- Service Providers
After this a series of motivational and entertainment songs were sung. Two of the songs were sung by members from the audience.
At the end of the program , Nabil requested everyone to believe that until every girl in the country is safe, India is not free, and keeping this mind the crowd of about 500 people took an oath "We swear that we will not accept violence against women in any form. We also swear that we will take social, administrative and legal action against VAW. The program ended with audience invited to sign the oath.
