CAPART Watershed Program  
 

This program supported by CAPART, New Delhi is being implemented in 3 villages of Vijay Pur block, district Shoepur. This project covers an area of 1833 hectares.

Some of the major activities done in this year are:

Construction of check dams, gully plugs
Boulder checks
Farm bunding
Rnovation and deepening og 6 wells
Agri inputs to BPL families
Formation and six women SHG and 3 watershed committees.

In Pohri (Shivpuri), the subject of ownership of biodiversity resources was taken up. The Gram Sabhas were encouraged to give adequate attention the natural heritage of their communities and make efforts for their protection and regeneration. Some Gram Sabhas adopted the motion of declaration of their sovereign rights over the biodiversity resources of their villages. These were declared as Jaiv Panchayats. The decision of the Gram Sabha was circulated among various other communities for taking the subject forward. Copies of these resolutions were also sent to the Prime Minister of India.

Information was collected on the medicinal plants in the forests of Gwalior and Shivpuri. Community meetings and Healers sammelans were arranged for collection of information on herbal medicines.

Several sammelans were organized the Traditional healers to share their knowledge on the medicinal plants of this region.

Biodiversity inventory was prepared of 10 villages to document the biological resources of the community, community’s dependence on them, their uses and their economic value
Sambhav published a book on Biodiversity Piracy. The Book provides exhaustive information on the patenting game of the Profit making designs of the commercial companies.

In some villages farmers were motivated to use traditional seeds for cultivation.
Farmers from the project area were sent for training on Traditional Farming to Dehradun. It was organized by Nav Danya, New Delhi.

Staff participated in a number of workshops on Biodiversity Conservation organized by Sanjivini, Nav Danya, Action Aid, Rupanter

Sambhav served as Nodal organization for the campaign on Food Security for the Action Aid’s Partners in 1999.

In the Project areas there are regular discussions for the farmers on the Subject of Conservation of the Traditional Agriculture resources and adoption of sustainable practices.

Sambhav sent out letters of appeal to all the MP for giving a serious look at the then upcoming Agriculture Bill in the Parliament. Certain subsections of the Bill will have severely damaging effect on the natural heritage of the county. It gives special concessions to the MNC for their expansion of seed production and monopoly
