Sambhav Gyan Mandir Pohri Shivpuri
It is a primary to intermediate level education center. It strives at assisting
children of deprived families in improving their educational levels. Girls and
boys both study here. It has beautiful and serene environment surrounded by
trees. Its playground is very spacious and children love spend their game
periods here. The school is located about 2 kilometers from main town on Mohna
Road. It is government recognized school. Many parents find hard even to pay
minimal fee to cover the cost of running the school .Some parents choose to
contribute agriculture produce as fee of their children. Initially, it was
created to experiment with the school curriculum. To make education relevant
subjects like environment studies and simple vocational activities were added.
These included plant nursery raising and plantation. A special booklet was
prepared to study the equalent words for Sahariya dialect. It was seen as major
link to create better communication between the facilitator and the learner.
School has been famous for its cultural activities. Every year children
participate in the culture fair through their talent of singing, elocution,
acting, dancing and singing.
The objective of Sambhav’s education program has been to activate the Government
schools. Government being the major provider should do its job, Our job is to
ensure that children attend the schools and parents and community take active
interest in managing the quality and supervision of the school; Due to the
shortage of financial resources, it has not been possible to pay adequate
attention on innovation. At one time there were 20 village level tutorial
schools. These were supported by Action Aid, UK. Working on our agenda, when
Government expanded its education program to every hamlet, the project gradually
withdrew from all the places. It was in the hope that Government schools will
deliver the quality education to the Sahariya girls and boys. On the contrary,
the education level of children rapidly fell below the average level. The
Sahariyas parents do not not much value in the modern system of education. It
was hard to imagine at that stage that education will go in the hands of private
people and government schools will not meet the expectations.
The present education facility was seen to serve as teachers training centre.
Here the teachers of the tutorial schools would come and learn the basic skill
of teaching and making our learning an experience of joy and relevant to the
community and individual life.
Sambhav Gyan Mandir Ghatigaon
Similar approach was adopted in the Ghatigaon Block of Gwalior. Here the
financial resources came from Christian Aid London. There were 23 schools
started in different villages of Sahariya population. For almost eight years
these centers provided good education support to the communities. Several
children excelled in the local Government exams. These schools have been closed
.At present one school up class fifth is running in Ghatigoan on Dhuan road. In
addition to basic course the school organizes education on sanitation and
hygiene. Sambhav continues encouraging the parents to send their children to the
Government Schools. After the discontinuation of the financial support, the
education program was withdrawn. There is dire need of quality education
facilities in all these areas especially among the Sahariyas. In the tribal
villages education has to be seen in the context of community expectation and
their participation.
